King Penguin in the Mother CityCape Argus (Cape Town)11 October 2007Bliss BarberCape TownHe's in a tuxedo, he's a metre tall and he's dropped into Cape Town for dinner. The adult King penguin, weighing a hefty 15kg, was spotted on Milnerton beach last week and taken in by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob).King penguins, the second largest species of penguin, are native to the sub-Antarctic islands which include Prince Edward, Marion and the Falklands Islands. There are more than four million King penguins in the Southern Ocean. The centre believes it is unlikely that the penguin swam on its own into South African waters based on the bird's hefty weight and inclination to accept food from humans. One staff member pointed out that a penguin covering such a vast distance should be thin and believed instead that the bird probably entered the country by boat.Sanccob's veterinary team declared the penguin healthy, aside from a minor chest infection, but chief executive officer Alan Jardine said the bird cannot be sent home due to potential diseases with which it may have come into contact.Research from the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research reveals that a penguin exposed to such diseases could wipe out an entire colony of penguins if re-released and it therefore discourages setting the bird free.Jardine said the future of the bird is unclear at the moment, but confirmed that it will be unable to remain in the Sanccob facilities because of the warm climate. The penguin is currently living among other African penguins and sea gulls at the Sanccob centre, but Jardine said potential alternative homes were under consideration."We'll probably look to public organisations or to zoos, be it nationally or internationally," he said.Releasing the penguin to a zoo was the most favourable option because of the resources it would have available to create environments conducive to the specific needs of the animals."There are many existing facilities with cooler units in cooler areas," he said. The penguin is hand-fed twice a day and is receiving antibiotics for its chest infection as it awaits a new home.Although the penguin is only one of approximately 1 000 sea birds rescued each year by the centre, staff members say it's the first King penguin they've seen in years.Source: http://allafrica.com/stories/200710120173.html |
