SA bans wild abalone harvesting indefinitely 25 October 2007

South Africa has placed an immediate ban on the commercial harvesting of wild abalone (also known as perlemoen) fishing â?? an industry that sustained some 800 jobs â?? to protect the species. Government spokesperson Themba Maseko said on Thursday that Cabinet did, however, approve a social plan to address the job losses that would result from its decision this week to suspend wild abalone harvesting. Some of the measures that had been incorporated in the social plan, included the development of a sustainable aqua-culture industry, and the issuing of additional permits for whale watching and shark cage diving.
